Preston's road to riches
The Fishergate Central Gateway Project is set to bring £90million to the city.
PRESTON City Centre is undergoing £3.39million worth of changes which are estimated to bring £90million to the city and surrounding area over 15 years.
The 18-month project, which had £1.38million funded by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to improve the approach to Preston City Centre as well as make the city “more attractive.”
Jim Robson, Assistant Director of Lancashire Highway Services said: “We want it to have the wow factor. The flags and kerbs are significantly higher quality. We’ve used natural materials which will last for hundreds of years.”
Key approaches which are being improved are Preston railway station up Fishergate as far along as Lune Street, Corporation Street from the junction with Ring Way all the way up to Fishergate and from Corporation Street and along Ringway to the junction with Friargate.
The scheme is looking to improve the links with key destinations in the city such as UCLan, as well as managing slow down traffic by using what’s known as shared space.

Mr. Robson said: “There has been one traffic complaint made so far. Contractors carry out daily inspections to make sure the likes of traffic cones are in place as that’s obviously a safety issue.
“We’re also working in liaison with businesses to prevent disruption and trying to work with the majority. For example, we altered plans to start work on Lune Street at the end of the year to accommodate the carpet shop as this time is usually the busiest for them. The same goes for Thomas Cook.”
Businesses were made aware of the plans 12 months prior to the start date.
The project is set to bring £80million to Preston itself and £10million to the wider sub region, according to Lancashire City Council.
